Post 45: Covering Up

Siding has begun!

When the old ceilings came down, we were thrilled to see the Red House’s original wooden beams, but when interior walls were demolished, what was exposed was not so pretty. The Federal style house’s central chimney stack, looked like it was slapped together by an over-enthusiastic toddler.

Likewise, the pleasing lines of both old and new walls and ceilings are interrupted by pipes, ductwork and electrical wires.

Evidence of all these vital networks is disappearing now that Kiesman Drywall has begun to insulate the walls. The first step was to tack an air permeable netting, or membrane, to the studs, creating spaces to hold the dense pack cellulose which will be blown in next week.

While this was happening, Nils and I were busy at the lakeside beach where two late season storms broke tree branches that fell on our swim platform and blocked our way to the water. We used loppers, a chainsaw and elbow grease to clear away most of the debris but we’ll need to bring in a professional to finish the job.

It was a hot day for such physical labor and we rewarded ourselves with a swim, our first of the season. Happy Memorial Day weekend!
