Post 5: Swedish Death Cleaning

aka “Furniture Hell”

With work on the house delayed by rain, we redirected our energy and attention to sorting through two large self-storage units crammed with furniture and boxes of household items, books, art and memorabilia. About half came from the farmhouse (we bought the Red House with all its contents) and the rest from our two separate Maine homes which we’d put in storage for three years while we were living in London. All together, it was too much stuff!! There was no question, a serious Swedish death cleaning was required.

Working in the heat and humidity, we made what felt like a million decisions until we cut our possessions in half, choosing to keep only items that we thought useful or beautiful. We sold some antiques, gave away items still in good shape, and reluctantly took a few items to the dump. But even there, a few things found new homes. It was hard work. On August 19th we celebrated Furniture Victory Day and went out that night to watch a movie at the Bridgton Drive-In. Rural living.

Swedish Death Cleaning is as much for you as it is for the people who come after you.
