Post 11: Footings and a Frost Wall

It was busy at the farmhouse today.

A frost wall is poured and the foundation gets back filled with sand and gravel.

Nils took this video with his new Brinno time lapse camera. Today was a practice for filming the house move, which is drawing nigh. We are excited and nervous about it, but the professionals are nonchalant.

Fox and Sons inserted the second and final 50-foot iron. (We thought there would be four but two massive beams will be sufficient to hold up and move the house sideways.

Earlier this week, Henry’s Concrete poured footings for the foundation, and after they cured, a worker came to pry off the forms.

Yesterday, Henry sent a crew of five men and women to assemble forms for the frost wall on the north side of the basement. They worked like a well-oiled machine. (We would show you, but Nils hadn’t mastered the Brinno then.) At 4 o’clock a concrete truck rolled in to fill the forms.

This afternoon, the place was buzzing with the sounds of Jim’s excavator backfilling the footings and the cured frost wall. A trusting worker packed down the sand as Jim emptied his bucket just inches from his head! Meanwhile dump trucks made repeated deliveries of gravel and loam and a “Flowboy” (extra long truck with a conveyor belt in it) delivered so much sand the field looked like a replica of the mountains.

  1. This is a great site! I am so glad you two were moved to buy the red house and make it your home. You are both a perfect fit in Sweden.

  2. This is so exciting! I love seeing it at each step of the way. I can’t see any access to the blog posts prior to #10. Thank you for sharing this amazing process!
