It’s been almost a month since we moved in to what has felt more like a work site than a home. Each day that we are here, the Red House has become more like home. This week we took another step toward that goal with the hanging of wallpaper in the brass bedroom. Installer Kerry Munn did an amazing job matching the edges, factoring in the “repeat” of the pattern and working right up to the plaster ceiling. One of the painters commented that the room reminds him of his grandmother’s house. That’s the look we are going for!
Carpenters returned to install millwork created in the shop. Carl and Nick designed and built new fireplace surrounds by copying the style of the old one in the dining room, which was lovely but covered with too many coats of paint as to sand off and repaint. Ed continued his restoration of the original front stairs. He has removed the old carpeting and the staples that attached it to the risers and sanded, filled and primed the stairs. This week he constructed the skirting boards that will go up the wall and be topped by moulding that matches the original trim. And down in the basement, Gagnon HVAC installed an air source heat pump, ensuring we will have a warm game room for future family ping pong tournaments.
We saved the old brass drawer pulls and knobs but did not have enough of them for every cupboard in the kitchen so it took some hunting to find others that matched them. Couldn’t find any at antique or old house parts stores so had to revert to Amazon and Ace Hardware to complete the look.
On Wednesday, one of the many small mountains surrounding the house (sand, gravel, rocks, dirt) was transformed from a hill of weeds into a tidy pile of crumbly brown loam. This required three pieces of heavy equipment. A very large excavator with huge jaws bit into the hill and dropped its mouthful of rocks and weeds and dirt onto a giant sifter. The sifter shuddered and shook, screening out the big rocks and weeds and allowing the dirt to fall through the cracks. Then a front end loader scooped up and moved the dirt into a new pile. This went on ALL DAY LONG.
We are excited that the landscaping process has begun. It will take a few years for the land to heal.
Meanwhile, Nils continues his mission to expose all the stone walls around the property and I battle back the bittersweet on the edge of the forest. I am also selecting and refinishing used furniture. Not a day goes by that we don’t revel in the beauty of our setting. It’s beginning to feel like home.

Amazing. I can now see you and Nils in every photo. Can’t wait to see it all in person.
Just lovely! I have enjoyed following this journey with you.
Coming along! You’ll be shocked by the silence and stillness when the workers retreat…..
