This was a transformative week at the Red House. Joe from Drew Corps arrived early each morning to pull out old stumps and move mountains of dirt (fill), gravel and sand. He defined the boundaries for a narrowed driveway and spread and compacted a base for loam. We now have a front and back yard that will covered with loam and sod from Mainely Turf of Fryeburg. Joe also prepared the earth along the edges for a field mix of seed to be covered by hay.
In just a few days, the area went from moonscape to landscape. It’s possible now to imagine what it will look like when the circular driveway is finished and the edges are green again.
Inside, Kerry Munn finished wallpapering two more rooms. The new place is looking old again.
We have not made any improvements to the old carriage house, but will soon restore electricity to the structure. As a finishing touch, and a nod to the past, we have rewired an old street lamp salvaged from Wellesley College campus that Carol Johnson bought and left in the hayloft. She would have been delighted to see it used on the farm. Dan McQueen, a neighbor who has blacksmithing skills, fashioned a shepherd’s crook to hold it aloft from the carriage house.

Gorgeous fireplace surround.
You are lucky to have a neighbor with smithing skills. He did a lovely job on the lantern crook.
